Progressing – Charlotte Clewlow

August started with a lovely day at Cholmondeley Horse trials with Paddy who produced a nice dressage test for 27.8, had a silly pole show jumping and stormed the cross country to take 2nd place, such a lovely consistent horse.

My average day on the yard during August has been quite busy I generally work between 8-10 horses with a mixture of activities, an example of one of my days in the middle of August was a quick trip to Southview to jump Harry in the Newcomers, followed by jump schooling for Lady, Mollie, Misty, Flower and Tara, flatwork for Danny and a hack for Paddy, Basil and Suzie.

A visit to Fieldhouse BS show saw Paddy win the Discovery with a lovely fast double clear and Tara jump a lovely clear before having a go at her first real show jumping jump off turns, she was great, taking it all in her stride doing a good time, just rolling a pole. We followed this with a visit to Southview where Tara did a fantastic double clear to take 3rd place in the Discovery.

I have also had a number of show jumping outing with the younger/less experienced horses to both Tushingham and Alsager, these outing give the horses the experience of a competition outing without the pressure of the affiliated competitions, making them fantastic training grounds and a good way to give the horses a lovely enjoyable experience.

Bold Heath Horse Trials saw super Paddy do it again with a 29.3 dressage, a lovely show jumping round just rolling a pole to then stormed the cross country for 2nd place. Mollie and Lady both had good outing, Mollie did a nice dressage test for 33, jumping nicely but had 2 unfortunate poles (the show jumping was the influential element in the placing in the BE90 at this event) and flew the cross country to take 10th place. Lady did a lovely test for what I felt was a disappointing 36.5, her show jumping was much smoother, just 1 unlucky pole, she then stormed the cross country a little too fast to gain 2 time penalties that just moved her out the placing. Both the young mares are progressing with every outing.

We decided having qualified 4 horses that we would have a debut CJCeventing visit to the show jumping festival at SCOPE this year. This involved a considerable amount of planning and organisation to get 4 horses and all their relevant paraphernalia to Stafford showground for a week. Plus, the food and clothes needed by us humans. Tara had a fantastic learning opportunity during her time at Scope, her first time staying away – made easier by having her friends with her, she jumped 4 days out of 5 in three very different arenas’, firstly the scary indoor, then the huge outdoor on grass and then in a smaller arena on a surface, she as usual was fantastic taking it in her stride, although she did think the big grass arena was quite exciting to jump in. Basil competed with Lyndsay and they had a really good confidence building outing with a good double clear in their first prelim round. Paddy was great as ever and just missed out on the placing due to unfortunately rolling the last pole in the jump off. Harry competed in his first ever 1.15 class and his first time on grass for a couple of years, he demonstrated his scope and gained confidence as the week progressed, with each round getting better. I am so pleased with attitude and effort of all the horses and feel we had in invaluable experience.

A quick turnaround meant getting home from Scope on Friday and taking Katie to Llanymynech Horse Trials on Saturday to compete in the BE 4yr old qualifier where she came 3rd. Her attitude is that of a much more mature horse and she did a fantastic double clear – even the commentator commented on her attitude and maturity. I am very excited about her future.

August ended with one of my best days this year so far – Joey finally after 8 months off went for a hack and he loved it!
